Self-Portrait

For a long time now, I’ve been trying to fit in some kind of standard mold that would define me as an artist, a designer, and many things. It doesn’t seem very easy to try to fit in one aspect of art and ignore the others; so, I’ve come to an alternative solution. I am going to define my body of work and not think twice about how exactly it would fit in the normal sense of categorization. I am simply an artist who experiments.

With that said, I present to you the permanent collection of Ben Vess’s art.

ART

With my art, I really have no “speciality.” My pieces range from simple pencil drawing to complex digital media with a lot of things in between; including but not limited to: pencil, charcoal, pastels, acrylic, photography (both digital and film), photoshop, and many more. The driving force behind my desire to create art is my insatiable need to experiment.

Currently, my latest experimenting experience is with acrylic. Personally, I’ve never been fond of painting in general because it was next to impossible to create the pieces without touching them incessantly. When I was growing up, I’ve experimented with tempera gouache and watercolor but never oil or acrylic. My first acrylic piece was done last December.

My forte in my art would be my photography. It was a little hobby I picked up while living in New York City. My photography can be categorized as photojournalism, stock, portraits, and fine arts.

COMMERCE

Most of my works of design are concentrated in digital media (PDF, brochures, web badges, buttons, headers, and the likes) with a lot of overlay into print media (business cards, logo design, print flyers, banners, etc.). A lot of what I’ve done over the course of the past two years can be seen in my commerce collection.
